Submission can be a good thing

"Submission is not about authority and it is not obedience; it is all about relationships of love and respect. In fact we are submitted to you in the same way." (p. 145)

i find this a bit tricky to grasp and am trying to think about how to apply it in everyday life. Something like...'I surrender to everything, in the name of love?' Yikes! that's pretty scary. And to me this is where trust comes in...i gotta have trust.

This is what I understood in my discipleship meeting the other night. We are to be willing to 'lay down our lives for one another' like Jesus did for us. But laying down not only means to death, but also, putting others before ourselves. (I John 3:16) Not to be used and abused, but to submit to one another. I can think of no 'safer' place to be but to be doing the will of God in this way.

I agree with both of you, Jennifer and Valerie!!

I did find this submission thing "a LOT tricky to grasp" too, because I've claimed to be independent and self-sufficient for a very long time... And the idea of being 'unconditionally submitted' is not something I'm glad to admit...

But, reading The Shack, I realized that this eager feeling we have about 'freedom' and 'independence' is not but a lie!!

We are not free if we want to be free just according to man's concept of freedom! being free and submitted at the same time is one thing that just Papa can provide us...

here is where the idea of "trust" is soimportant... because we are afraid of this submitted idea because we don't trust other people. we think that when we start to be submited to one person, that person will take advantage of us, hurting and harming us... rhis is why it's so difficult to be submitted...

but not to GOD! He would NEVER do such terrible things to us...

but although I know and believe in all this, it doesn't make any easier to be submitted...

I guess we need to practice trust first, and then, submission...
